THIS MEN’S health week, blokes are encouraged to book in a date with their mate. Tamworth Omni Recreational Men’s Shed president Jim Finucane knows just how important it is to be able to share stories and connect. The local group has had community services drop-in every day this week, from One of a Kind to Whiddon’s Home Care and the Australian Men’s Health Forum. “I’ve been working with the Australian Men’s Shed Association since 2007,” Mr Finucane said. “Each day we want to draw people here, a lot of people don’t know this place exists and we are available for people to come and tell their story, this helps with mental health and suicide.” There’s 1000 men’s sheds in Australia and Tamworth’s is one of the only recreational ones, meaning men can meet up to talk but there’s no hammers or nails. Mr Finuncane said it’s important to talk about men’s health because it encourages others to stay active. “We all talk about whatever our problems are and that eases our minds,” he said. “It does away with the thought of suicide or thinking you’re no good. “Talking is good for your health.” Read also: This week the Australia Men’s Shed Association (AMSA) is encouraging all men to book a date in with a mate to boost positive health and wellness outcomes. AMSA executive officer David Helmers said especially with ageing there’s an increased importance in staying connected to community. “You’re never too old to get something out of having a group of friends, whether they’ve been around forever and a day, or they’re new connections,” he said. “The empirical evidence is clear. Social participation is positively linked to mental wellbeing and quality of life, particularly in older people,” said Mr Helmers.
