MAYFL excited about new season, new equipment, new field

Midland Area Youth Football League (MAYFL) Athletics Director Eric Buschlen is always excited for the start of a new season, but this year he is particularly pumped — for a number of reasons.

For one, MAYFL will be offering a full six-week season after having to settle for an abbreviated schedule last fall due to the pandemic.

For another, the league will be able to hold games on Dow High’s new artificial turf field for the first time.

And for yet another, the league is purchasing a boatload of new equipment for players’ safety and convenience.

“We’ve already placed an order for 100 brand new Riddell SpeedFlex helmets, and we’re using the same funds to purchase integrated pants for all players,” Buschlen said, noting that the flex safety helmets are of the same type of material and shape used in high school, college, and professional football and are designed to lessen the impact on players’ heads.

He added that, while the helmets were purchased with safety in mind, the integrated pants were purchased with convenience in mind.
