NSW Health is urgently trying to track down people who attended an IKEA store in Sydney after one new case was linked to a visit to the store potentially putting 2000 others at risk.

A number of Sydney venues to the list of COVID-19 exposure sites on Friday before Gladys Berejiklian announced 44 locally acquired coronavirus cases.

Of the new cases, 35 are linked to existing clusters and cases, while nine remain under investigation.

The new cases include 19 people who were out and about in the community while infectious.

This was a pressing point for Berejiklian to drive home a warning to residents of Greater Sydney, who now face a tightening of COVID-19 lockdown restrictions as of 5pm on Friday.

Anyone who attended IKEA Tempe on 6 July from 10am-9pm is a close contact and must immediately get tested and isolate for 14 days, regardless of the result, and call 1800 943 553 unless they have already been contacted by NSW Health.

NSW Health believes there are about 2000 close contacts now linked to this exposure.
