Ready to hit the beach and need some new sunglasses to protect your eyes? Heading on a road trip and want some shades to help with the glare? Chances are you’ll run across some Oakley options in a search for sunglasses, but the company also offers prescription eyeglasses.

With so many eyeglass options available, you may have a few questions about Oakley’s offerings: What sets them apart, if anything? How much should you expect to spend? Where can you find them?

Here’s the scoop on Oakley eyeglasses.

Founded in 1994, Oakley is based in Lake Forest, California. Originally named after the owner’s dog — an English Setter named Oakley Anne — the company is now a subsidiary of Luxottica, an Italian company known for manufacturing performance sports equipment. In addition to glasses, Oakley also sells shoes, hats, and bags.

Perhaps best known for their sunglasses and eyewear for athletes, Oakley’s streamlined style and logo are easy to pick out. Many athletes choose the brand because of the grips on the frames that help keep the glasses in place.

Oakley offers hundreds of different frames in men’s, women’s, and children’s styles. There are full-rim, semi-rim, and rimless options in lots of different frame shapes. Plus, the company also has a variety of different tints and protective layers on their lenses.

Many of their frames are available in two different fit styles, which they call “standard” and “Asian.” The “Asian” fit provides lower profile frames.

Oakley also sells cleaning kits, goggles, and shields to help protect your glasses and face.

For a pair of Oakley eyeglasses, you can expect to spend around $140 to $340 without any discounts. With the additional cost of prescription lenses, you could spend as much as $450 total for your new glasses.

This is comparable to or even a little less than many other designer brands.

Because there are fake Oakley glasses on the market, you’ll want to make sure that you’re buying a pair from a reputable retailer.

An optometrist

One way to do this is by purchasing Oakley eyeglasses from your optometrist.

While buying glasses through an optometrist can cost a little more, you’ll be supporting a local retailer. In addition, an optometrist can do a routine eye exam to check for and diagnose any eye conditions, and provide a prescription for eyeglasses.

Note that sometimes you can find discounts on lenses or frames to help bring down the price.

Local retailers

Besides buying from your local optometrist, you can search for Oakley stores or other brick-and-mortar stores in your area that sell official Oakley eyeglasses by checking the store locator on the Oakley website.

Oakley

Alternatively, you can purchase Oakley eyeglasses through their official website. Deals are frequently available, and you can get your glasses shipped directly to you.

Just note that navigating the website and choosing or editing options on eyeglasses isn’t always that easy. See more on the website below.

FramesDirect

FramesDirect is known for selling designer frames at discount prices. So, it can be worth your while to see which Oakley designs FramesDirect offers.

FramesDirect orders the glasses directly from the manufacturer, so you don’t need to worry about ending up with a knockoff. Each pair of prescription glasses also goes through several rounds of quality control before being mailed to you.

GlassesUSA

Another website you may want to check for Oakley glasses is GlassesUSA. They offer a huge selection of glasses overall and sell designer glasses at discount prices.

EyeBuyDirect

Like GlassesUSA, EyeBuyDirect is an online-only retailer. EyeBuyDirect carries Oakley, Ray-Ban, and other styles of eyeglasses and sunglasses. Ordering from them online is simple and direct, and customer service is pretty easy to get ahold of.

While Oakley isn’t a member of the Better Business Bureau (BBB), they have received an F rating from the organization. With 44 customer reviews, Oakley has a 1.07 out of 5-star rating. The company also has 128 complaints closed in the last 3 years and 54 complaints closed in the last 12 months.

Oakley’s Trustpilot rating is very similar. Oakley has a 1.04 out of 5-star rating and 410 customer reviews — with 83 percent of them giving the company a 1-star rating.

Some of the poor feedback is about the quality of glasses received, but the majority of comments are about customer service, refunds, and shipping issues when shopping through the Oakley website.

There’s also a class action lawsuit against Luxottica of America, Inc., which licenses and produces Oakley products. The lawsuit alleges that the company failed to appropriately protect customer information from data breaches.

Ray-Ban

These glasses sell for a very similar price point to Oakley glasses, but they have a slightly different look, offering more rounded and aviator shapes.

Like Oakley, Ray-Ban is best known for their sunglasses, but they also offer a collection of eyeglasses. Ray-Ban and Oakley have long been competitors, and both are established, well-known manufacturers of glasses. Both companies are now part of Luxottica.

Bollé

Bollé is a company that focuses on protective equipment for athletes. If you’re trying to find protective sports glasses and goggles with a different look from those Oakley sells, these designs are of similar quality and are a similarly priced option with a slightly different look.

Liingo

If you’re more interested in the cost and range of available styles, a company like Liingo might be a better match.

They’re constantly adding new frames to their website. Plus, the company sends frames to your house so you can try them on before deciding to buy. Note that there’s also a virtual try-on option if that’s easier for you to use.

Liingo doesn’t sell designer frames and basic lenses are included in the price, so it’s possible to save $300 when you purchase eyeglasses from the company.

Oakley eyeglasses tend to be a popular choice for athletes — thanks to the technology integrated into their frames and the attention the company puts into perfecting the grips on their glasses.

If you spend a lot of time outside, Oakley’s lenses have a variety of tint and polarized options, which can set them apart from other eyeglass retailers.

If you’re hoping for the cheapest frames, though, Oakley isn’t your best option. However, retailers like FramesDirect or online coupons might make them more budget friendly.

Oakley doesn’t get high scores for customer service on glasses purchased via their website. If dependable customer service is important to you, consider shopping from an optometrist, local brick-and-mortar store, or another online retailer.
