Next Sunday, June 20 will mark exactly 681 days since the last pitch of a Cape Cod Baseball League game.
For the record, Cotuit’s Casey Schmitt came on in relief to throw that final pitch, inducing Harwich batter Max Marvsac to line sharply to shortstop Adam Oviedo, who stepped on second to double off Riley Tirotta and clinch the 2019 championship for the Kettleers.
The 10-3 victory over Harwich marked the record-setting 17th overall Cape Cod Baseball championship by the franchise from the village of Cotuit.
Last season’s stoppage due to the COVID-19 pandemic marked the longest period without baseball in the Cape League since the hiatus between 1939-45 due to World War 2.
Are we ready for some baseball? You bet we are!
Our two local teams – Hyannis and Cotuit – will kick off the season with the remainder of the teams in the league on June 20 with Cotuit hosting Wareham at Lowell Park at 5 p.m., while Hyannis travels to Bourne at Doran Park at 6:00.
Quest for the Cup: The annual Patriot Cup series will begin on Monday, June 21 with Hyannis playing host to Cotuit.
Begun back in 2004 during the regime of Barnstable Patriot publisher, the late Rob Sennott and editor David Still, the Patriot Cup is unique to the Cape League because of its Barnstable-wide rivalry. Initially, Patriot sportswriter David Curran first pitched the idea of the cup to be awarded to the series winner between the two villages.
Since that time, it has been sponsored by this paper with the winner of the series receiving a trophy signifying the mythical Barnstable village championship.
Four-time defending champion Cotuit has won the Patriot Cup seven times in the last eight years the series was contested. The Kettleers have won the cup eleven times in total, while the Hyannis has five wins to its credit, its last in 2015.
